Hook: All of us understand that mid-day slump where you just want to take a nap, but have a lot of work that needs to get finished. You could grab a coffee, red bull, monster, OR you can cure that exhaustion with a 5 hour energy.
Thesis: The purpose of this 5 Hour Energy commercial is to relate to the audience effectively enough to increase their profits.
Examples of Relativity to Audience:
1. Using the battery level icon to display people's energy level
- Almost everyone has a smartphone nowadays and can imagine seeing people with low battery percentages. Appeals to logos of audience and getting tired during the day
2. Showing people in familiar atmosphere's doing everyday jobs and activities
- Gentleman in the city walking into an office building
- Construction worker yawning on the worksite
- Mom dropping her kids off at Tae Kwon Doe
- Man stretching before a run
-Shows them all looking tired with the low battery percentage and sort of just dragging through the day. With showing these people, the audience is able to relate to the actor's situation/atmosphere. I believe in showing these specific actors that 5 Hour energy is also establishing its target audience of adults who get that mid-day slump and need a pick me up.
3. Narrator's Expressions/ Background Music
- You'd see "a lot of us" walking around all day in need of a recharge
- Isn't life better at 100%
- Background music is upbeat and kind of peaceful
-By saying "a lot of us" they are trying to connect the audience and show that most people get tired during the day and you're not alone. "Isn't life better at 100%" just like back to the battery icon percentage, linking expressions to what audience knows. Background music is upbeat/happy/peaceful and something you could imagine hearing during busy day. Correlating music with the brand.
Effectiveness: The commercial is effective in relating to their target audience and convincing them to buy 5 hour energy. Also effective in trying to show that drinking 5 hour energy works and can give people the energy they need to finish the day strong. After the actors were feeling tired and drank a 5 hour energy you see all they battery percentages at 100. You also see the gentleman active in his meeting, mom pushing her kids on the swing set and smiling, construction worker discussing tasks, and the man who was stretching is now jogging. These examples also attempt to appeal to the audience's ethos and show that drinking their product really does work. "Just one 5 hour energy can recharge your battery fast". Where it loses effectiveness and credibility is at the end where you can read "these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA". I personally would rather drink coffee than a 5 hour energy because I'm not really sure what's in it, so for me the commercial was not effective. But I can see for those who don't like the taste of coffee or other energy drinks and can relate to the actors in the commercial, this ad would be effective in convincing them to buy the product. We've all seen 5 Hour energy commercials before but I don't think anything in this specific commercial created more Brand Recognition because it just showed ordinary life in attempting to associate with the right viewers.
All in all, this 5 Hour Energy commercial was effective in relating to their audience and convincing people to buy their product. Through connecting energy levels with battery percents, showing relatable actors and atmospheres, and using familiar expressions I think 5 Hour Energy did a great job in selling their product to the target audience.
